EU ministers meet in Sopot to tackle environmental challenges

An effective use of natural resources, climate protection and safeguarding of biodiversity are imperatives for Europe's economic recovery, environment ministers who gathered yesterday for a two-day informal meeting in the Polish sea resort of Sopot agree.

Environment ministers representing the EU Member States, candidate countries and EFTA countries are taking part in the meeting, together with European Commission delegates: commissioners for the Environment and Climate Action, as well as NGO representatives, invited guests and national experts.

The Informal Meeting of Environment Ministers is organized once per Presidency. Its aim is to discuss current issues related to EU policy (environmental protection and climate change), with a special emphasis on Presidency priorities.

The first two sessions were held yesterday. The agenda included crucial needs in the area of environmental protection until 2020: the EaP initiative and effective resource use.

The third plenary session will take place today and will be concerned with the EU negotiating strategy prior to the 17th Climate Convention conference to be held in Durban this year.

The fourth session will be devoted to the effective implementation of strategies aimed at adapting to climate change.
