Presidential Elections on Sunday

In a final burst of campaigning ahead of the country’s presidential elections on Sunday, the two politicians vying to become Poland’s next head of state have been outdoing each other in promises to voters.

Speaking to sportsmen, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS), the main opposition party, vowed to do everything in his power to bring the summer Olympic Games to Poland in 2020 or 2024, private broadcaster TVN reported.

Kaczynski has been trailing in the polls behind Bronislaw Komorowski, the presidential candidate of the business-friendly ruling Civic Platform (PO) party.

Komorowski has been canvassing the support of rural voters, from whom his party has traditionally attracted less support than PiS.

Komorowski declared he was against any attempts to the disband the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund, Polish farmers’ separate pension system, but said it should be reviewed to make sure it was not open to abuse.

Disbanding the fund was a key demand of the PO before it formed a ruling coalition with the Polish People’s Party (PSL) in 2007.
