Poland’s population aging at alarming rate

The Polish society is on an "express train to old age," the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna writes citing the most recent demographic forecasts from Eurostat.

In 2060 as much as 34.5% of the population will be 65 or older, the second highest percentage in the EU (behind Latvia), forecasts show.

The median age in 2060 will measure 51.2 years - the third highest number after Romania and Latvia.

The more worrying aspect of the demographic changes underway, however, is the decreasing number of children. The deteriorating proportion of old to young people means that a smaller working population will have to maintain a higher number of pensioners, Prof. Krystyna Iglicka-Okolska said. When that burden becomes unbearable for the working population, it creates a threat of a "social revolution," the professor added.
